Many people are concerned about their old silver fillings and they don’t like the look of them either. We can replace them with modern new ones that look better.?
?
About the amalgam fillings:

These fillings have been used for many years because they are durable, easy to use and cheaper than alternatives.

Disadvantages are that they look grey and also contain mercury, which is bonded with other metals like silver, copper, zinc.

Mercury is a toxic metal and small amounts can be released from the fillings through time in your body.

In extreme cases amalgam fillings have been linked to multiple sclerosis, Alzheimer’s disease chronic fatigue and anxiety.

The Department of Health says that amalgam fillings are safe and there is no sufficient evidence that these fillings are linked to any medical disorder.

However countries like Germany, Australia and Norway do not recommend amalgam fillings for pregnant women, children or people with kidney disease.

The white fillings materials are based on glass and plastic and are free of mercury as opposed to silver fillings.

There is also a bond created between the white filling materials and your tooth, which strengthens the tooth structure.

This bond is not present in old silver fillings which, when they are large size may also create cracks on the tooth as they expand by absorbing water from your saliva.

The white fillings are more technique sensitive to apply, so they do take more time.?

My advice, as always is to have regular check ups and scaling.

We will check for signs of wear and damage to your old fillings and will be able to identify fillings that are no longer effective even where there is no pain or discomfort.?

If your existing fillings need replacement then modern materials, which are tooth coloured can be used. I personally have practiced mercury free dentistry since 1999.

There is an argument sometimes about the strength of the white fillings, however the modern new materials are equally durable and long lasting.

The life of a filling depends on the quality of the restoration, the materials used and also your hygiene. If you brush and floss your teeth daily and have regular dental check-ups followed by a professional scaling then they should last for many years.

If your existing fillings are in good condition then it is up to you to decide to replace them or not, whether it be for aesthetic or other reasons.

We will always answer your questions and take great care to ensure perfect results.
